Trish Clowes' Tangent Nonet feat. Gwilym Simcock and Thomas Gould
Show Time 8:30pm / Doors Open 7:00pm
Trish Clowes (BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist) and the Tangent Nonet (jazz quintet & improvising string quartet) perform music from Clowes’ second album for Basho Records, which has been described as “Powerful, lyrical and with a sound-world that ranges from the austere to the ecstatic” (Peter Quinn, the Arts Desk).
“This is British Jazz at its best…I suggest you go and see her now before it’s difficult to get in the room, I assure you she is a great, great talent” – Jamie Cullum.
Since her debut album ‘Tangent’, Clowes has won accolades for her music’s integrity, luminosity and ambition, and her saxophone sound has been compared to Stan Getz, Charles Lloyd and Iain Ballamy. She has enjoyed live radio broadcasts, jazz festival appearances and a PRS for Music Foundation award for her own festival Emulsion. Conceptually sitting on the fringes of jazz, the compositions have an emphasis on strong melodies and creating interesting platforms for improvisation.
Trish Clowes (tenor and soprano saxophones), Gwilym Simcock (Piano), Chris Montague (guitar), Calum Gourlay (bass), James Maddren (drums), Thomas Gould (violin), Thea Spiers (violin), Adam Robinson (viola), Louise McMonagle (cello).
