ReVoice! Festival: MYCALE (John Zorn‘s acapella quartet) / Support: Georgia Mancio and Pete Churchill
Show Time 8:30pm / Doors Open 7:00pm
“Mycale utterly dazzled with their precision harmonies and flute-like intonations” - Downbeat.
Breathtaking multi-cultural acapella group, Mycale, was formed by cult composer and saxophonist John Zorn to interpret songs from his remarkable Book of Angels.
Tammy Scheffer (Israel/USA) has been making waves in the Jewish music world; Ayelet Rose Gottleib (Israel) is an accomplished jazz singer and composer; Sofia Rei (Argentina) is a new leading voice in South American jazz and Malika Zarra (Morocco) combines North and Central African muses with jazz and European popular music. Using sounds, vocals beats and lyrics in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, French and Arabic (drawn from Rumi, Fernando Pessao, the Hebrew Bible and more) they come together to present Zorn’s music as you’ve never heard it before.
Mycale have played at venues and festivals in the US, Canada, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Israel and most recently Paris (3 standing ovations) and tonight make their UK debut.
Support: Georgia Mancio and Pete Churchill:
“[Churchill's] voice is gentle, his interpretation plain but thoughtful and his piano playing beautifully poised” - The Observer.
Pete Churchill leads a mightily impressive multi-faceted career as an educator, composer, arranger, pianist and vocalist.
