Steve Grossman is simply one of the greatest living Tenor Saxophone players in the world. Replacing Wayne Shorter in the Miles Davis group at the age of 18, Grossman, a child prodigy from Brooklyn, exploded onto the International stage. Through his work with Miles, Elvin Jones and his own numerous groups and recordings he has become a truly iconic figure in Jazz. The late great Michael Brecker called him simply "the best we have".

Born in the same year and both brilliant pianists Yaron and Gwilym could not come from more different backgrounds. Welsh born Gwilym was a piano child prodigy who was playing big classical halls by the age of 11 and studied at Chethams school for gifted musicians. Yaron aspired to be a professional basketball player in his homeland of Israel, but an injury at the age of 16 saw him shift gear to the piano. Now at just 30, and signed to the same label ACT, both are recognised amongst the leading lights in jazz piano anywhere in the world.
John Law ("One of Europe's most adventurous pianists" the Times) and rising new piano star Mark Pringle will be performing pieces from their new, stunning CD. This recording features, alongside original compositions of theirs, compositions by Bach, Metheny, Lyle Mays and Cole Porter. Powerful pianism coupled with delicate, contemporary harmonies.

A meeting of minds and fingers, first convened at the F-IRE festival of New Talent at the Pheasantry two years ago, Keyboard Kinship will be taking the idea of collaborative pianism several stages further, for an afternoon of mostly especially-written keyboard music for four to eight hands, on pianos, organ, fender rhodes and synthesizers. Featuring some of London’s most adventurous and exciting young pianist/keyboardists, previous performances have included music derived from birdsong and Morse code, a re-working Aphex Twin’s remix of Phillip Glass’ orchestration of David Bowie’s “Heroes”, and even a bit if hands on audience interaction with the inner workings of the keyboard.

Two of this country’s foremost arrangers and accompanists, Simon Wallace and Jenny Carr, have worked with an astonishing array of artists from Jason Donavan and Kylie Minogue to Imelda Staunton and Imelda May. This afternoon they come together to present a program of scintillating two piano arrangements of their favourite music with a special guest appearance by one of their favourite singers, the multi-award winning Barb Jungr.

Exploring their mutual love of jazz and classical music through a mixture of original music and standards. Pablo Held grew up in a family of musicians in Hagen, Germany. At eighteen he began his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne under John Taylor and Hubert Nuss.
Kit Downes plays regularly with his own Quintet, Stan Sulzmann's 'Neon', Troyka, The Golden Age of Steam, Sam Crockatt Quartet and Seb Rochford - he has also played with Lee Konitz, Paul Rogers, Leafcutter John, Micachu, Iain Ballamy, and Eugene Skeef. Kit’s work with Empirical took him to The North Sea Jazz Festival, The JVC Festivals in New York, Montreal and Newport, and Vancouver Jazz Festival. Edgardo "Dado" Moroni, is with no doubt one of the most incredible pianists in the world today. Basically self taught, Fats Waller, Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum and Erroll Garner were his very first influences, then later Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner.
The trio who will join Dado at PizzaExpress is formed by one of the strongest and creative rhythm sections around: Ross Stanley.

Liane Carroll and Ian Shaw have four BBC jazz awards between them and, as great friends since meeting on a European tour twenty years ago, have collaborated on many concerts and projects, as well as guesting on each other's recordings. Their version of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend" has been on compilation albums and been performed as the closing number in shows from London and Warsaw to Glasgow and Barbados. With two Steinways and a packed jazz club, this four-fisted fest of frolics and deeply felt vocalising is their third performance in this series.

One of the UK's most original singers, Gwyneth Herbert, joins forces with the members of the Buck Clayton Legacy Band to explore the jazz repertoire of Peggy Lee. The band's arrangers, Matthias Seuffert, Adrian Fry and Menno Daams, have taken Lee's work with Jack Marshall, Quincy Jones and Billy May as the starting point for new charts for what has been recognised as one of Europe's leading mainstream bands. Gwyneth brings her own unique gift for storytelling in song to reinterpret tales of love lost and found, as well as the life affirming qualities of music itself. Expect vibrant playing from what Jazz UK called this "knockout band" plus tears of pain and joy from songs both familiar and less well known. The sets will also include music by Buck Clayton himself, which he left to co-leader Alyn Shipton to keep his memory alive.

Bruce arrived on the New York jazz scene in 1988, and soon joined the great tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine; their musical collaboration spanned a decade. Thereafter, he joined the bands of Nat Adderley, and Vincent Herring’s quintet with Dave Douglas. In 1990, Bruce joined the Terence Blanchard Quintet; the band toured extensively, and also recorded six CDs, as well as several movie soundtracks including Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. These recordings showed off Barth's considerable gift for composition and arranging.

Deborah Brown is one of the finest jazz vocalists in the business. Her magnificent voice and truly awesome technique have earned her a place as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, where she currently resides, Brown relocated to Europe for a period of 12 years during the 90's, where she was a teacher and mentor, while travelling worldwide on concert tours.
Pete Churchill has been working as a composer, pianist, singer and teacher for twenty years. Originally trained in Canada he has been based in England since 1985. He is a Professor of Jazz Studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London but his freelance work takes him all over the world - both as a performer and an educator.

A versatile drummer, Lenny White is still best-known for being part of Chick Corea's Return To Forever in the 1970's. White was self-taught on drums and he largely started his career on top, playing regularly with Jackie McLean (1968) and recording "Bitches Brew" with Miles Davis in 1969. White was soon working with some of the who's who of jazz including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke and Stan Getz among others.

A versatile drummer, Lenny White is still best-known for being part of Chick Corea's Return To Forever in the 1970's. White was self-taught on drums and he largely started his career on top, playing regularly with Jackie McLean (1968) and recording "Bitches Brew" with Miles Davis in 1969. White was soon working with some of the who's who of jazz including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke and Stan Getz among others.
