Event Has Passed

Last Show: Monday 19 th November 2018

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

This special show sees London's own guitar hero Ant Law team up with Belfast's finest pianist Scott Flanigan. This hard hitting contemporary 4tet, co-lead by Ant and Scott, features a dream team rhythm section: Ferg Ireland & Marc Michel. Ant is delighted to bring Northen Irish piano sensation Flanigan to Pizza Express for the first time. This is a one-off Jazz Fest special, featuring the hard hitting rhythm section of local hero Ferg Ireland (bass) & Lyon-born Marc Michel (drums). Tonight, they'll address some of their favourite pieces (including by Coltrane) and some standards, as well as their own original tunes. This is a rare chance to catch heavyweight Flanigan in London-town, and also a rare opportunity to hear Law address pieces of the American songbook. Come and hear the new and the old collided.

“Law is an innovator”

The Guardian

Flanigan and Law first hooked up in early 2018 but this is their first ever London date, where they'll explore compositions by both leaders as well as standards and other well-known tunes. This may be a lunchtime gig but brace yourselves for some energetic, dynamic sounds and lots of chords.

Ensembles featuring guitar and piano together are always exciting, having been present right throughout the jazz tradition. The most obvious or popular example is perhaps Wes Montgomery's historic recording “Smokin' At The Half Note” with Wynton Kelly, a huge influence on Law & Flanigan. The interplay between the two instruments both capable of playing lines or chords, always results in spontaneity, interplay and energy. It also requires taste, sensitivity and restraint from both parties.

Ant and Scott are ideal personnel to operate in this realm - both knowing when to play, stop, and play more! Ireland is one of the busiest and most versatile acoustic bassists in the UK. He has a huge sound and is a highly interactive accompanist, as is Marc Michel. Michel is also incredibly busy all over Europe, and for good reason. Whilst both Law and Flanigan have been known to explore contemporary harmonies, rhythms, forms, they also share a huge love their love and respect for the jazz tradition and standard repertory.
