An award-winning international performer, recording artist, composer, lyricist, and writer. She is best known for “interpreting” the songs of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, and for creating the concept of The New American Songbook. Her performances across four continents have received rave reviews and she has recorded thirteen solo albums, including several collections dedicated to the work of Bob Dylan, and a number of other recordings in notable collaborations with US Emmy and Grammy award-winning John McDaniel, renowned percussionist and composer Kuljit Bhamra, and Mari Wilson and Claire Martin. Jungr appeared on Talking Bob Dylan Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan for BBC TV with Odetta, Martin Carthy, Billy Bragg, and Liam Clancy, among many more, and has appeared on programmes about the voice, Bob Dylan’s and Leonard Cohen’s work and on singing Dylan. She was the subject of a PBS special in the US series The Kate for her collaboration with the great jazz pianist, Laurence Hobgood. Will Friedwald’s The Great Jazz and Pop Vocal Albums (2017) devotes a chapter to her 2002 landmark album of Bob Dylan’s songs in new arrangements, Every Grain Of Sand (Linn Records).
Jenny Carr (Piano)
Classically trained, Jenny arrived in England from Australia in the early 1990s as keyboardist and backing vocalist for Jason Donovan’s world tour. Her first London shows were at Hammersmith Apollo and Wembley Arena! Since then she has carved out a diverse career, working with pop artists Julia Fordham, Bliss, Beverley Craven, Yazz , Billy Ocean, Imelda May and Ant and Dec. She has contributed to six albums by iconic country-soul singer/songwriter Jeb Loy Nichols and backed artists from the legendary Muscle Shoals stable (Bonnie Bramlett, Donnie Fritts and Larry Jon Wilson) in a series of concerts at Cargo in London. As well as freelancing with numerous jazz and swing bands, she is known as a sensitive accompanist, playing with vocalists such as Caroline Nin, Sarah Moule, Nina Ferro and the queen of cabaret Barb Jungr, with whom she has collaborated on several albums and toured extensively.As a solo pianist/singer she has worked at most of London’s premier venues and hotels, including The Savoy, The Dorchester, The Langham, The Ritz and Ronnie Scotts and as well as jazz repertoire and piano classics she is happy to play songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s through to contemporary hits.
Jonathan Lee (Drums)
Jonathan spent hIs early years playIng vIolIn and sIngIng In church, endIng up In a catIdral choIr and varIous orchestras. He went to a musIcal school In New Zealand and took up drums when he was 15, when his group of frIends needed a drummer for their band. On leavIng school he played In bands In his spare tIme, whIle workIng as an Interpreter. He taught himself drums, gettIng occasIonal lessons from experts, untIl at the age of 28 he dId a jazz degree In AustralIa, whIch he loved. For the first tIme he had a proper drum teacher.
Over the years Jonathan has worked wIth quIte a few well-known jazz saxophonIsts, such as Plas Johnson (who recorded “The Pink Panther’), Clifford Jordan, Lee Konitz, and RichIe Cole.
Jonthan played wIth the Grammy-nomInated sInger James Hunter for 22 years, recordIng seven albums wIth hIm, mostly for Daptone Records in the USA. “We were lucky enough to frequently play wIth the great New Orleans pIanist Allen Toussaint.”
Memorable gigs in recent years have been the Hollywood Bowl In Los Angeles (supportIng BB King), Wembley Arena and the NEC (supportIng Bryan Adams), Massey Hall Toronto (supporting Mavis Staples). TV shows Include The Tonight Show wIth Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien in the USA, Top of the Pops and the Jools Holland show in the UK. PrevIous support tours have been wIth Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, Los Lobos, Chris Isaak, Sharon Jones, and The BeautIful South.
Jonathan has played at many festIvals including several appearances at Glastonbury, Phoenix, LatItude In the UK, High Sierra and Monterey Jazz FestIval (CalifornIa), Austin City Limits (Texas), San Francisco Blues Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival (Canada), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland) and Byron Bay Festival (Australia). Recently he performed a New Year’s Eve Concert In Chicago to a TV audIence of 23 mIllIon people.
Dudley Phillips (Bass)
After attending the Guildhall School of Music in 1979, he began to record and perform with various musicians such as trombonist Annie Whitehead, saxophonist Tim Whitehead, drummer Richard Bailey and vibraphonist Orphy Robinson.
In 1992, he co-founded jazz group Perfect Houseplants, with pianist Huw Warren, saxophonist Mark Lockheart and drummer Martin France.
He played with many musicians in various genres, including jazz musicians such as Andy Sheppard, Billy Cobham, Jim Mullen, Iain Ballamy and Martin Speake; world music artists such as South African singer Sibongile Kumalo, Moroccan Gnawa singer Mustapha Bukbu, Brazilian singer Cibelle, Malian duo Amadou et Miriam, Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy, Spanish flamenco singer Chonchi Heredia, kora player Tunde Jegede, and composer Surinder Sandhu's Saurang Orchestra; musicians from the English folk scene such as Mark Nevin, Mary Coughlan, Eddie Reader and singer- songwriter Adam Masterson; contemporary composers such as the Balinescu Quartet, the Almeida Ensemble and composers Stephen Warbeck, Kevin Seargent and Will Gregory; songwriters such as Bill Withers, Mica Paris, Anja Garbarek, Sophie B.Hawkins and Amy Winehouse.
