PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

'It’s a Man’s World' is the first album in 10 years by multi award-winning jazz singer and songwriter Becki Biggins. Inspired by blues and gospel music (arriving at gospel-tinged jazz pop) Becki has paired up with Hammond maestro John-Paul Gard to bring old songs to new audiences; material is inspired, written and made famous by men, with songs by Billy Joel, Glen Campbell, Elvis and Frank Sinatra, as well as fitting originals by Becki herself.

"She’s got the most INCREDIBLE voice"

Gayle Lofthouse, BBC Leeds

Becki's original songs take their inspiration from her own experiences, and those of her friends and family.  You Should Be Married By Now is rebellion against well-wishers asking for news of nuptials the second a woman turns 30; FURIOUS is a tongue-in-cheek tale of bad sex; I Almost Took a Lover is about the regret one can feel, years later, at doing the right thing, and the first single I'm Giving Up On You tells of the breakdown of a bad marriage.

Woven between Becki’s own songs are arrangements of jazz standards, classic pop and rock tunes and the occasional song that started out as country, from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Elvis and Glen Campbell, all reframed by Becki and her incredible band. The instrumentation - jazz organ (John-Paul Gard), drums (Andy Tween), saxophones and flute (Ben Waghorn) and, on this show, trumpet and trombone - provides an old-school sound to balance Becki's intentionally new-school stories.
