The Cold Light Ensemble’s debut album ‘Let it Fall’ was recorded and released in 2017 and features compositions by James Woodhall. James had played piano alongside Daniel Tigg (Bass) and Rob Pennel (Drums) for many years but wanted to combine the trio format with string quartet.  This music is all about combinations and collaborations and therefore at their launch concert, the band performed surrounded by contemporary visual art, and even featured contemporary dance.

The influence of the Neil Cowley Trio and GoGo Penguin are immediately apparent in the trio writing. The string writing owes more to Stravinsky and Bartok and the result is a vibrant, engaging sound world. Neil Cowley himself described the music as ‘punchy and tight’ and ‘full of energy’.

The band are delighted to be playing at the legendary PizzaExpress Jazz club for this Sunday lunchtime concert which will feature music from ‘Let it Fall’ as well as new material.
