Event Has Passed

Last Show: Thursday 18 th November 2021

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Two great PizzaExpress favourites join forces to celebrate the music and songs of Louis Armstrong. New York singer-pianist Daryl Sherman is joined by British trumpet legend Digby Fairweather in a deep dive into the works of one of the greatest of all jazz performers, Satchmo. Digby and Daryl are joined by Dave Green on bass and Neil Bullock on drums.

"No veteran singer inhabits the full range of American Popular Song repertoire quite like the irreplaceable Daryl Sherman. A gently swinging pianist as well, precious few possess her abundant versatility, style and charm."

Steve Futterman, The New Yorker

DIGBY FAIRWEATHER
Digby Fairweather began his professional jazz career in l977, combining playing (with the PizzaExpress All Stars among others) with writing and broadcasting for the BBC and Jazz FM. He is founder of the Jazz Centre in Southend-on-Sea, the National Jazz Archive, and co-founder of the Association of British Jazz Musicians and Jazz Section of the Musicians’ Union. During his career Digby has recorded prolifically, written several books about jazz, broadcast regularly on the subject, and worked with most of Britain’s leading Swing players, before forming his band ‘The Half Dozen’ in l995. He received the BBC Jazz Society’s ‘Musician of the Year’ award (l979) and thereafter British Jazz Awards (Trumpet/l992 and Services to Jazz/l993), the Benno Haussman Award (Services to Jazz, l993) and the Freedoms of London and his hometown Southend-on-Sea. From 2003-7 he was musical director for blues legend George Melly, and from 2007 has also toured with rock icon Paul Jones (Manfred Mann et al). A prolific award-winner, in 2009 as Founder of the National Jazz Archive he was presented with their ‘Special Award’ in celebration of the organization’s twenty-first anniversary. In 2015 Digby received the British Jazz Award (the ‘Jazz Oscars’) for ‘Services to Jazz’, and in 2021 he received a further 'Special Award' from the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

DARYL SHERMAN
A long time favourite of UK audiences, the charming, canny, swinging New York singer-pianist Daryl Sherman returns London to focus on jazz trumpet icon Louis Armstrong as a singer and his importance to the American Song Book. Known the world over as 'Satchmo', his unique gravelly sound and phrasing influenced singers from Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra. Daryl Sherman is one of the rare singing pianists equally talented in both roles. A three time MAC Award winner and voted Hot House 2015 "Best Jazz Vocalist", Sherman is a unique stylist with charm, wit, chemistry with her audiences and ability to make herself at home in any musical setting be it jazz or cabaret.
