Jazz Master Class

Event Has Passed

Last Show: Saturday 18 th April 2020

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

A Jazz Master Class, open to the public, with Saxophone Giant Don Braden. Born 1963 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to New York City in 1984, where he played with The Harper Brothers, Lonnie Smith, and Betty Carter. In 1986–87 he toured with Wynton Marsalis, and following this played with Out of the Blue, Roy Haynes, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson, Tom Harrell, Art Farmer, and the Mingus Big Band. At this public master-class, with a true tenor saxophone giant and jazz master, one can gain insight into interpretation, accompaniment, band leading and how to build a set as he works with one of the students attending the course. A short Q&A session at the end of the master-class gives member of the public the opportunity to ask Don or a member of the group about preparation and performance. A limited number of tickets are on sale to the public for this unique event.

Master-classes are considered to be a highly effective means of musical development and provide a wonderful opportunity to watch and listen as the master musician listens one student at a time and gives essential feedback, constructive criticism and guidance. Apart from advice and on how one may apply a different approach, the tutor may demonstrate of how to play certain passages, help resolve technical issues and offer ideas on interpretation. The value of this setup is that all students and observers can benefit from the master's comments on each piece. For a non-musician this setting provides a great opportunity to see some of the "behind the scenes" work that goes into to performing.
