The Soul of New Orleans

Last Show: Sunday 23 rd December 2018

The Pheasantry (Chelsea)

Henry Roeland 'Roy' Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair was a New Orleans blues singer and pianist. His piano style has been described as "instantly recognizable, combining rhumba, mambo, and calypso.” The music journalist Tony Russell wrote that "The vivacious rhumba-rhythmed piano blues and choked singing typical of Fess were too weird to sell millions of records; he had to be content with siring musical offspring who were simple enough to manage that, like Fats Domino or Huey 'Piano' Smith. But he is also acknowledged as a father figure by subtler players like Allen Toussaint and Dr. John." Dom Pipkin has shared stages and bills with both of these heavyweights and tonight presents his all-star band in a 100th Birthday celebration of the great man’s music.

“When Dom Plays the piano magic happens!” – Paloma Faith

“I can’t hold a candle to this guy. He’s a great piano player” - Jamie Cullum, BBC Radio 2

One of Europe’s top exponents of New Orleans rhythm and blues, piano player Dom Pipkin breathes new life into the classic funk sounds of The Meters, Dr John, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair with a stellar list of festival and radio and TV appearances including The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the London Jazz Festival, and an extended residency at Ronnie Scott’s famous jazz club in London.
He has travelled the world as Musical Director to acts such as Paloma Faith, playing keyboards for Morcheeba, Paul Weller, Laura Mvula, Ray Davies and Pee Wee Ellis to name just a few, but has always kept a close connection to New Orleans, where he is a regular visitor and performer.  2014 saw him sharing a stage with fellow piano stars Allen Toussaint, Jon Cleary and Ellis Marsalis at the prestigious “Piano Night” in New Orleans.

Pipkin’s acclaimed band The Ikos bring the sounds of New Orleans blues and RnB to every venue they visit.  Tonight they deliver a loving tribute to the music and soul of Professor Longhair with the most authentic and compelling take on his infectious and life affirming blend of blues, rhumba, and funk that is so uniquely New Orleans.  Pipkin’s fans and friends range from New Orleans musicians Zigaboo Modeliste, Paul Sanchez and Jon Cleary through to Jonathan Ross, Paul Weller, Paloma Faith, David Arnold, and Jamie Cullum.
