"Gritty rock-powered guitar improv" The Guardian

Featuring some of the most innovative young musicians to have emerged from London’s exploding jazz scene, Flying Machines combine visceral improvisation with anthemic melodies and lusciously textured soundscapes to captivating effect.  Having toured all over the UK following the release of their debut album in2016, Flying Machines are now set to release their eagerly anticipated second album New Life this autumn and firmly establish themselves as one of the biggest breakthrough acts to have emerged from the UK jazz scene in recent years.

New Life represents a significant milestone in the band’s development.  In partnership with Grammy, MOBO and Mercury nominated producer Sonny Johns, the band’s trademark fusion of contemporary jazz with progressive rock has been lifted to soaring new heights.  From thundering, all out metal assaults, to ambient meditations and plaintive melodies, New Life sees Flying Machines pushing the envelope in terms of extremities of dynamics and explorations of form.  The band also document their foray into the anarchic freedom of group improvisation for the first time, with unrestrained, improvised interludes that dove tail gracefully into more expansive and through-composed material, a risk-embracing approach that now informs the band’s electric live performances.

Flying Machines released their eponymous debut album to critical acclaim in2016 and embarked on a 24 date UK tour supported by Arts Council England, culminating in a sold out, headline show at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and a performance on the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude Festival.  Further establishing their credentials as one of the UK jazz scene’s most exciting emerging acts, Flying Machines recently opened for legendary US guitarist Mike Stern for an exclusive UK show at the Jazz Cafe.  Their second album, New Life, will be released worldwide on 19th October 2018, on the Ubuntu Music record label.
