Gemma & the Travellers

'Too Many Rules & Games' Album Tour 2018

The 'Too Many Rules & Games' album tour 2018 continues with UK dates at the PizzaExpress Live venues in Soho and Maidstone. Gemma & the Travellers gives a nod to the early deep Soul, R&B, Northern Soul and Funk of the 60's but their unique songwriting style gives a refreshing twist. Gemma has a powerful, inimitable voice, inspired by the likes of Dusty Springfield, Julie Driscoll, Etta James & Aretha Franklin. Recently aired on BBC radio’s 'Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show' and opening live for his show at the Jazz Café in Camden, Craig described the latest single as a “tasty little nugget of Soul”.

Gemma has a distinctive voice; a Soul woman who left the south of Italy as a teenager with a small bag in her hand and a bit of cash in her back pocket. Travelling through Europe, Gemma met Robert P., an Anglo-Swedish guitarist in Germany and formed a travelling duo which ended up returning to Robert’s home town, London.  After many years getting sick and tired of the city’s “distractions”, the duo sought a more creative environment to write and fell in love with the mystical Northern Brittany, where they formed the band Gemma & the Travellers.

Signed to 'Légère Recordings', one of Europe’s best Soul & Funk labels, their début album 'Too Many Rules & Games' was released to critical acclaim.   Gemma writes all of her songs with the help of Robert P. on the guitar.  Gemma takes inspiration from Dusty Springfield, Julie Driscoll, Etta James & Aretha Franklin.

Recorded live at Lemoncake Studios in northern Brittany, producer Robert P. strived for an authentic and original Soul sound like that of an old vinyl from the 60s.

Among the memorable concerts, Gemma & the Travellers played at the Hook & Sling Festival in London with the King of Funk, Rickey Calloway, who released many tracks with the Dap-Kings, and also part of the line up was Daptone’s Sugarman 3 & Mickey & the Soul Generation. Also opening up for Lee Fields & the Expressions in front of a packed crowd at the Nouvelle Vague in February was a highlight show.   An extensive European tour is programmed for spring 2018 in Germany, France and the East of Europe.  The Jazz Café in Camden, London was another special moment, opening for the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show and sharing the stage with Daptone records' Saun & Sarr.  Craig aired the latest single on BBC radio numerous times and described it as a “tasty little nugget of Soul”.
