Last Show: Tuesday 4 th February 2020

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Following successful shows from Binker Golding, Mark Kavuma, Cykada, Pyjaen, Kassa Overall and many more, Heads Up returns with two of the finest emerging bands on the London jazz scene. Tonight's 'Heads Up' show features Ineza and Hypernova. Hypernova is a collective of young jazz musicians, who include members of the bands Invariance, Where Pathways Meet and Nihilism. They draw their influences from a plethora of musical styles including renaissance, bebop, neo-classical, drill and reggae. Ineza is a Rwandan-born Belgian Jazz singer, based in London.  Ineza has been active in high profile bands like The London Vocal Project and Capital Orchestra. Her debut EP ‘Where are you from?’ was awarded a place among Bandcamp's best Soul albums. Ineza is one of only 8 artists to be granted a place at the second edition of artist development program "LEAP" founded by international music producer and promoter Serious.

"Ineza labels herself neo-soul and R & B and if she continues to marry this simply stunning voice to great storytelling she could see herself step up into a mantle left vacant on these isles since Amy Winehouse. But who am I to judge? As she herself asks, “where are you from?”, knowing it really doesn’t matter as long as you are of good spirit and on the same path."

HYPERNOVA

Hypernova is a collective of young jazz musicians who include members of the bands Invariance, Where Pathways Meet and Nihilism. They draw their influences from a plethora of musical styles including: renaissance, bebop, neo-classical, drill and reggae. As pioneers of the genres jazz drill and neo-bebop (bebop music infused with Bachian harmony), they fuse the traditional with the music of today. They do not just stop at music, as they draw from philosophy, sociology and neuroscience to impart wisdom on their audiences in a fashion that is simultaneously intellectual and primitive. Though this seems oxymoronic, their band leader Deji Ijishakin a.k.a. Xvngo, uses his prowess as an orator to engage the audience in a theatrical manner. All of this is complemented by the nihilistic comedy that each member of the band partakes in whilst on stage.
