This exciting trio collaboration sees legendary UK saxophonist, Iain Ballamy (Hermeto Pascoal, Loose Tubes, Norma Winstone) team up with Shaw and irrepressibly brilliant pianist Jamie Safir (Will Young, Elaine Delmar, Kyle Minogue). Expect a gloriously lyrical travelogue from early American song through Ellington, Horace Silver and Billy Strayhorn to Joni Mitchell. They play from their 2019 recording, ‘What’s New’ (Silent Wish Records).

“Three great jazz voices entwining. Captivating.”

Robert Elms, BBC Radio London

‘Ballamy’s is a melodic, thoughtful style’ Time Out

‘Safir conjures up refreshingly different harmonies...’ Jazzwise

'What’s New' was a timely coming together of three of the UK’s leading jazz musicians playing in chamber format: multi-award winning vocalist Ian Shaw (Kurt Elling, Guy Barker, Liane Carroll), his contemporary the legendary saxophonist and composer Iain Ballamy (Gil Evans, Bill Bruford, Carla Bley) and one of the finest young pianists of his generation Jamie Safir (Claire Martin, Will Young, Judi Jackson). Their interplay also draws on the connection of Ballamy and Shaw who have known one another almost since the start of both their careers. The material is about human connections - friendships, relationships, positive and otherwise - and plunders 80 years of the popular song form. These are new arrangements of songs of love and hope – from the title song of their recording to Bernstein’s 'Some Other Time' as well as the Bacharach/David classics 'Alfie' and 'You’ll Never Get To Heaven' alongside works by Legrand, Jobim and Ellington.
