As a Jewish composer in Berlin, Kurt Weill was forced to flee his home in the 1920s, relocate to Paris, and then on to America. “In search of Youkali” charts his life through song, as he continued to search for a place of artistic and personal freedom.

Consistently earning praise for her outstanding stage presence and vocal performances, British mezzo-soprano Katie Bray (“Here is a name to remember.” - Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph) has fast established herself as an artist to watch. Recent roles have taken her to Opera North, English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera Holland Park and English Touring Opera. Equally at home on the concert platform, Katie Bray has performed in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, and the Holywell Music Room and she regular appears in the London English Song Festival and Oxford Lieder Festival. She is joined at the piano by William Vann, whose opening performance in this series was praised in The Observer for its “beautifully judged accompaniment” and by Phil Cornwell on double bass.
