PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

To celebrate the London launch of their first CD, Le Départ, the unique chamber jazz group ‘Butterfly’s Wing’ entices you into their stunning soundworld and thoughtful virtuosity. David Gordon and Jacqui Dankworth’s collaboration provides the thrust of the
original material, interspersed with some new arrangements of classic songs, masterfully arranged by David for these four distinguished performers. Stripped of the usual jazz rhythm section of bass and drums, this group produces a transparent sound, by turns magical, intense, witty, rhythmically powerful – the ideal setting for Jacqui’s unmistakeable approach to song.

Grammy-award winning singer Jacqui Dankworth and pianist David Gordon have collaborated extensively on a variety of projects, including cowriting Time Takes its Time and the exquisite Butterly’s Wing, which gives its name to this project. The group’s repertoire also includes a multi-lingual feast of songs from around the world. The line-up includes three of the most
unusual, creative and original composer/improvisers around: multi awardwinning composer, David Gordon, who divides his time between playing jazz piano and harpsichord; ace cellist Rupert Gillett, and Chris Garrick, widely recognised, both by the jazz and classical worlds – including Maxim Vengerov – as the country’s leading jazz violinist.

Each of the four musicians combines a unique jazz sensibility, with a deep – but lightly worn – feeling for classical music. The group’s flexibility and freedom ensures that each performance they give is a unique response to its particular environment and moment in time.

JACQUI DANKWORTH

The highly acclaimed recordings of Jacqui Dankworth, "one of the classiest acts in British jazz singing" (The Guardian), have been stylistically diverse - including folk and blues - which demonstrate her superb skill as an eclectic performer and songwriter. She has collaborated with such wonderful artists as The Brodsky Quartet, Chick Corea, Courtney Pine, The BBC Big
Band, RTE, LSO and RPO Orchestras and many other amazing musicians.
