Event Has Passed

Last Show: Wednesday 14 th June 2017

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

JPQ is led by Led by co-founder and former Empirical trumpeter Jay Phelps. Phelps' music is a journey through an array of many styles and temperaments, with a strong sense of what is contemporary in Jazz today. He has spent the last 2 years travelling the world, writing, and has been on a spiritual journey that incorporates these influences along with the new addition of his vocals, into the music. 'Free as the Birds'- his new album (due for release, June 2017) uses this theme of travel as a main reference point.

“Assured, clever, fluent with a lovely soft-edged tone, he is already a player you could easily recognise after hearing him just once.”

Dave Gelly, The Observer

“Phelps exhibits much of Wynton Marsalis' fluency and vocalised tone.”
John Fordham, The Guardian

“Fashioning a scintillating tone that sounds like a mixture of Freddie Hubbard, Booker Little and Terence Blanchard, Phelps cites his experience with Andrew Hill’s Anglo-American Jazz Orchestra as a significant guidepost for some of his compositions.”
John Murph, JazzTimes

“Trumpeter Jay Phelps is an acrobatic solo displayer, cutting and fiery, and certainly not afraid of extended bouts of self-expression.”
Martin Longley, BBC
