John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus 'for Grappelli'

Event Has Passed

Last Show: Sunday 11 th September 2016

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

To kick off his residency, John brings the ever popular Sweet Chorus back to the club where they first performed in 1998. Conceived as a personal tribute to the great jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli, with whom John worked extensively in the 70’s and early 80’s, the band has been touring and recording for 18 years. Based around the dazzling interplay between Etheridge and virtuoso violinist Chris Garrick, and backed up by the propulsive rhythm guitar of Dave Kelbie and Andy Crowdy’s nimble bass, the band evokes the essence of the Master without slavishly imitating the Hot Club sound, reflecting the spirit of freedom which characterised his musical expression.

"It is music that demands that you close your eyes and listen, for only then can the ethereal nature of what is being played stand separate from the physical reality of darting fingers and blurred plectrums."
