Last Show: Tuesday 7 th November 2017

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Singer Gina Foster and guitarist Ronnie Johnson, along with some talented friends crazy enough, revel in the music and gloriousness of Joni Mitchell. The origins of the band date from Summer 2014 when what had been intended as a one-off concert celebrating the peerless musical work of Joni Mitchell so energised the key participants - singer Gina Foster and guitarist Ronnie Johnson - that Joni’s Soul was born. Gina with her beautiful 'from-the-heart’ vocals augmented by a line-up of some of UK’s finest musicians - just like so many top players and her many fans - are in thrall to the consummate songwriting and, famously, the poetry framed in Joni's songs. Media interest in her music and the Joni Mitchell backstory has never been so strong, and even before her recent serious health crisis, Joni herself had made it clear she would no longer perform live. Interest and expectations for this show has consequently been immense. The band’s music and an interview with singer Gina Foster feature in ‘My Muse’, a BBC Radio 4 documentary on Joni Mitchell to be aired in September 2017. Joni’s Soul were invited to appear at the official Joni Mitchell convention ‘Jonifest’ in Canada last year - an honour the band were sadly unable to take up.

Get Ready To Rock

Coyote, Hejira, Edith and the Kingpin, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, A Case Of You, Trouble Child, Help Me and Gina Foster’s gorgeous version of Both Sides Now - it’s through songs like these that the band explore the unique songwriting and gift of performance Joni Mitchell so enduringly revealed in her iconic strongly jazz-influenced albums Blue, Court and Spark, Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and beyond …

Drawing on their own emotional response to these songs, Joni’s Soul look beyond merely the faithful reproduction of the Joni Mitchell songbook to shine a light on the most soulful aspects of her words and music. The band are determined that their new Joni’s Soul CD will, just as with this Dean Street performance, offer a similar level of artistry as the originals.
