Hailed by Jerry Bergonzi as “a bridge between tradition and modern saxophone playing” and “one of the shining lights in Canada’s jazz scene”, Kirk MacDonald is an award-winning Canadian saxophonist, composer and educator who has “maintained his integrity as one of Canada’s leading saxophonists for over 25 years” (Pat LaBarbera). His album Vista Obscura, which features LaBarbera alongside Harold Mabern, Neil Swainson and André White, won the 2015 Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year, and his 2017 release Silent Voices, with co-leader LaBarbera and featuring Swainson and Adam Nussbaum, has been met with critical praise in Canada.

In 2015 Kirk MacDonald’s depth as a performer/composer was honored with 4 major awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toronto Musicians’ Association and the 2015 SOCAN Haygood Hardy Award for Composition. His two most recent albums are 'Symmetry' featuring Tom Harrell, which won Best Jazz Recording at the East Coast Music Awards and 'Vista Obscura', featuring New York pianist Harold Mabern was chosen as JUNO’s Jazz Album of the Year.

Kirk has played to overwhelmingly receptive, full capacity audiences in jazz clubs and concert venues, including Dizzy’s Jazz Club 'Coca-Cola’ Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, as well as in France, Italy, Holland, Monaco, Australia, Korea, Bermuda, the Bahamas and most recently, Spain.

On 'Symmetry', UK Vibe wrote "first and foremost this is an album of fantastic compositions, all written by MacDonald, full of melody, eloquence and joie de vivre. MacDonald's sax playing is rich in detail and soulful in its delivery".
