For lovers of 60s Music, MIKE d'ABO's lunchtime appearance at Holborn's PizzaExpress on Sunday, 21st January 2024, guarantees a feast of nostalgic memories. Back in 1964 – in the wake of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals and Kinks – Manfred Mann charted with an infectious blend of Rhythm 'n' Blues, laced with a soulful 'pop' groove. After lead singer Paul Jones's departure in 1966, Mike d'Abo took over, singing on a further seven top ten hits, including The Mighty Quinn, (the group's 3rd #1, after Do Wah Diddy & Pretty Flamingo). Mike d'Abo's show, entitled A Mann & His Music, not only features his hits with Manfred Mann, but he breathes new life into his two best known songs, 'Handbags & Gladrags' and 'Build Me Up Buttercup'. Mike d'Abo is a true 60s survivor, with a wealth of stories and musical memories to share. Do not miss this unique opportunity!

“In compiling the Great British Songbook, I unhesitatingly place Mike d’Abo’s ‘HANDBAGS & GLADRAGS’ in the top 100 songs of all time.”

Neil McCormick. (The Daily Telegraph’s Music Correspondent)

Mike d'Abo first came to prominence in 1966, replacing Paul Jones as lead singer with Manfred Mann.  Seven Top 10 hits followed - 'Just Like A Woman', 'Semi Detached Suburban Mr James', 'Ha! Ha! Said The Clown', 'Fox On The Run', 'My Name Is Jack', 'Ragamuffin Man' - with 'The Mighty Quinn' becoming the band's 3rd # 1 (after 'Do Wah Diddy' & 'Pretty Flamingo').

Mike went on to achieve even greater success as a songwriter, composing 'Handbags & Gladrags' . . . produced firstly with Chris Farlowe (1967), and later with Rod Stewart on his first solo album, 'An Old Raincoat Never Lets You Down' (1969). In 2000, the song gained even greater acclaim after being recorded by The Stereophonics, and Ricky Gervais chose it as the theme for 'The Office'.

He also wrote 'Build Me Up Buttercup' for The Foundations (1968), which has since notched up 6 million plays on American radio. In the 1970's he composed several award winning jingles, (including Cadbury's 'Finger Of Fudge'), and wrote the film music for 'There's A Girl In My Soup', starring Peter Sellers & Goldie Hawn. Reverting to his role as singer, Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber chose Mike to sing 'King Herod's Song' on the original cast recording of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.

Mike remains a highly respected musician & songwriter . . . and still performs regularly with 'The Manfreds', alongside former Manfred Mann members PAUL JONES & TOM Mcguinness. He also fronts his own band 'Mike d'Abo & His Mighty Quintet'.

Mike's show is entitled A Mann & His Music. With an engaging stage presence, as well as singing his Manfred hits, Mike gives stirring renditions of his two most famous songs Handbags & Gladrags, and Build Me Up Buttercup. Mike d'Abo is a true 60s survivor, with a wealth of stories and musical memories to share. For lovers of 60s music, his lunchtime appearance at Holborn's PizzaExpress on Sunday 21st January, 2024 is an opportunity not to be missed!
