The Pheasantry (Chelsea)

Performing lyrical interpretations of the quirky, complex compositions from the legendary pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk. Originally inspired by the 1988 Carmen McRae album 'Carmen Sings Monk' with lyrics penned by Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln, Mike Ferro and Bernie Hannighen. This compelling tribute is sensitively delivered with character and exhilarating improvisation by Paul Edis on Piano, Andy Champion on Double Bass and Richard Brown on Drums. Along with Zoe Gilby’s unique vocal phrasing, a distinctive deep understanding and appreciation of Monk and McRae’s work is the highlight of this exceptional project.

“Zoe Gilby who revitalised Thelonious Monk’s uniquely familiar compositions via her frenetic, acrobatic and altogether magnetic scat vocals”

Southport Jazz Festival, Northern Sky Magazine

Zoe details this performance with an informative, fascinating time line of Thelonious and Carmen’s career including the story behind ‘Pannonica’ written in honour of the Jazz Baroness, patron of bebop, Kathleen Annie Pannonica de Koenigswarter.

“A sparkling, luminescent Zoe Gilby delighted a full house with expressive singing and many insights into the making of McRae’s late-career recording and the lives of the bop era musicians associated with Thelonious Monk and their loyal patron ‘Pannonica.’” “Beautifully crafted, powerful and highly inventive solos from this incredible accompanying rhythm section” Bebop Spoken Here.

Playing alongside Zoe in Pannonica are Paul Edis – Piano, Andy Champion – Double Bass and Richard Brown – Drums.
