A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

Event Has Passed

Last Show: Sunday 12 th May 2019

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Paul Ryan and the Kenny Clayton Trio take us to the movies for a night featuring music by such composers as John Barry, Henry Mancini, George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein (as well as his namesake Elmer) and Michel Legrand with songs from classic films and many neglected gems.  Paul, a favourite vocalist of the late jazz critic Jack Massarik, provides revealing anecdotes and stories behind the songs deploying the trademark irreverent humour he shares with Kenny, one of the UK’s leading pianists and arrangers, who has been musical director for a host of major stars including Petula Clark, Matt Monro, Dick Haymes and Charles Aznavour.  They are joined by bassist Eric Guy and drummer Mike “Ozzie” Osborn both of whom feature on the recent album Blame It On My Youth, recorded live at the Pheasantry.

"A rare treat...guaranteed to make you feel better."

Sir Michael Palin

Paul Ryan “sings with a knowledge and understanding of the nuances and wit of the great lyricists…each song a narrative…personal and poignant, opening a thousand memories…”
- Matthew Wright, Jazzwise

“Clayton solos with subtle sometimes quirky creativity and occasional touches of Garner. Guy and Osborn contribute first-class support and the trio swings elegantly behind well-planned vocals.”
- Hugh Rainey, Jazz Journal
