Event Has Passed

Last Show: Tuesday 10 th January 2023

PizzaExpress Live (Holborn)

After a lifetime of playing saxophone and flute for legendary artists, the well-regarded sideman and session player, Paul Speare, is now bringing his own exciting compositions to life. Paul’s music creates a heady fusion of jazz, classical and soul influences, with strong grooves and cinematic soundscapes. Many of the pieces refer to locations and moments in time that have been influential in Paul's life. He has assembled a band of players who bring their own flavour and personality to the project, together with invited guests, currently the soul/jazz vocalist Ginger Bennett.

"A fantastic track (Dark Energy)... definitely worth your time"

Leo Ulph, BBC Radio Kent

Paul Speare has worked as a recording and touring musician – playing saxophone and flute - for various pop and soul artists since the 1970s.

He was a member of Dexys Midnight Runners, playing on the hugely successful album Too-Rye-Ay and its anthemic singles Come On Eileen and Jackie Wilson Said.

He moved on to become a sought-after session musician, recording and touring with artists such as Elvis Costello, Madness, Nick Lowe, Difford & Tilbrook (Squeeze), John Watts (Fischer Z), and the Q-Tips (Paul Young), among others, and was particularly proud to be asked to play on the Special AKA's influential 1984 release Nelson Mandela.

Paul's flute and baritone sax playing can be also be heard on Paul Weller's recent albums Fat Pop and On Sunset.

Although his music career has been in the realm of commercial music, Paul has always had a deep appreciation of modern jazz and fusion. He has absorbed these influences into his own new material which he has recorded and produced for video and streaming under the title Time and Place.

Expect to hear energetic grooves, atmospheric soundscapes and fluid time signatures, together with improvised solos by Hilary Cameron (piano/keyboards), Simon Golding (electric guitar), Flo Moore (bass guitar), and Jonathan Ward (drums), together with the multi-talented vocalist Ginger Bennett.
