Phil Fearon was born in England on July 30, 1956. British record producer who was also the lead singer and songwriter of the band Galaxy in the 1980s. His hit singles include Dancing Tight and What Do I Do? He moved to Britain in 1962 and was a part of the bands Hott Wax and Kandidate in the 1970s.
He is one of the country’s most successful Music Producer's.
Singer, songwriter and producer Phil Fearon was born in Jamaica in 1956 but moved to London as a young boy. In the 1970’s he pursued his love of music, first with the group Hott Wax and later with Kandidate. They achieved a UK chart hit with “I Don’t Wanna Lose You” in 1979 (UK No.11) before splitting up and Phil going it alone at the start of the new decade. He put together the group Galaxy, initially as a manager/producer, but would later take centre stage as the main vocalist of the group. They released “Head Over Heels”, their debut single, in 1982, which was only a minor success before hitting the big time with the follow up, “Dancing Tight” the following year.
“Dancing Tight” reached No.4 in the UK and was credited as ‘Galaxy featuring Phil Fearon’, which would later evolve into ‘Phil Fearon and Galaxy’ and eventually just Phil Fearon. “Wait Until Tonight (My Love)” and “Fantasy Real” all came in 1983 with the former charting top twenty with both preceding Phil’s first studio album, “Phil Fearon and Galaxy”, which would break the top ten in the UK and chart top 40 in some parts of mainland Europe. Phil followed this with “This Kind Of Love” in 1985 . The album did feature one big hit, however, with “What Do I Do?”, a song which charted high across Europe and gave Phil a second top ten hit back home (No.5). A third followed with “Everybody’s Laughing” prior to the album’s release.
Phil wasn’t done yet. He had something to prove and in the Summer of 1986, “I Can Prove it”, proved that Phil was still capable of a hit when it put him back in the top ten for a fourth time, with a little bit of help from a rising production team! The track was given ‘additional production’ from Stock Aitken Waterman, who had just been in the top ten with Bananarama‘s “Venus” and at the suggestion of Mike Stock, Phil re-recorded the vocals, thus producing another hit and at the same time, bringing Phil some attention Stateside, where the track made the R&B chart there. Phil kept his association with SAW for the follow up, “Ain’t Nothin’ But A Houseparty”, but this did not follow “I Can Prove It” into the higher parts of the singles chart. After a long hiatus Phil is back with his own band for two exclusive live performances .
He maintained his studio and continued as a producer. He married singer Dorothy Galdes, better known as Baby D, the lead singer of the dance act who had a number one hit with “Let Me Be Your Fantasy” in 1994. Phil himself came out of retirement in the 2010’s when he started performing at retro festivals and occasional solo gigs. He released a best of, “Phil Fearon and Galaxy – Ain’t Nothing But A Party”, in 2013, just to remind us all of his significant achievements back in the 1980’s.
