Salud! Tom Jobim

Event Has Passed

Last Show: Saturday 7 th October 2017

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Three years on from her iconic ReVoice! Festival and following the success of new release, Songbook, award-winning vocalist/lyricist, Georgia Mancio, once again flexes her multi-lateral creativity with a new series of tantalising collaborations.

Georgia and virtuoso reeds player, Mark Crooks, co-lead a tribute to the remarkable Brazilian composer and Bossa Nova maestro Antonio Carlos “Tom” Jobim. Salud! Tom Jobim recreates the hits (Desafinado, Chega de Saudade, Corcovado and most famously The Girl from Ipanema) alongside lesser known gems with collaborators Elis Regina, Stan Getz, Frank Sinatra, João and Astrud Gilberto. Timeless, sun-drenched music played with authenticity and passion.

“As [Mancio’s] voice soars to paint precise arabesques in the air there’s a suggestion of Ella Fitzgerald by way of Bebel Gilberto”

Along with singer/guitarist, João Gilberto, Jobim was the architect of the Bossa Nova movement which emerged in the 1950s and 1960s in response to the heavier, more melancholy Brazilian music of the time. His beautiful, bitter-sweet melodies evoke the sunshine and easy rhythm of Rio de Janeiro combined with a jazz musician’s sense of harmony, the eloquence of George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and the sweep of Debussy, Chopin and Ravel. Also a skilled singer and multi-instrumentalist, he composed hundreds of songs over a forty year career.

“Crooks, something of a star”
Jazz UK

The historical link between jazz and bossa nova continues to attract top improvising musicians and tonight’s band features some of the UK’s finest. Sax and clarinet player Mark Crooks and guitarist Colin Oxley are both long term members of John Wilson’s famed Orchestra with regular appearances at The Proms. Pianist Robin Aspland (Van Morrison, Anita Wardell, Mark Murphy) has a deep understanding of this music’s feel and poetry. Bassist Arnie Somogyi (James Moody, Eddie Henderson, Tom Jones) and drummer/percussionist Dave Ohm (Ian Shaw, Gregory Porter, Anthony Strong) provide the groove and engine.

Georgia Mancio’s original language vocals (as heard on her 2008 Latin flavoured album Trapeze) combine the drama and light-footed charm that beats at the heart of this unique, all embracing repertoire.
