Tonight, Gillespie will be performing material from her new album Half Cut (Pastiche Records). Recorded in Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios and accompanied by her long term, power-house band Chris Montague (guitar), Tom Cawley (piano), James Maddren (drums) and Conor Chaplin (bass), the music on her latest release is turbocharged with lop sided, alt-county melodies, spring-loaded poetry and folk tales populated with characters fighting, loving, losing each other and themselves. Perhaps due to this album being partly written during lockdown, there is an overarching sense of emotional and physical claustrophobia punctured by the euphoria of escape as we veer from delicate melancholic laments to raucous piss-taking pastiche and Tom Waits-esque blues played by a virtuosic band of "jazz heavies.”
