PizzaExpress Live (Holborn)

PizzaExpress Live is very proud to launch a new series of stand-up comedy shows in our Holborn venue. Performers are drawn from the very best UK club comedians - many of whom are award-winners. Each night will feature three great performers. Whether you've come to see someone in particular or are just curious to see a comedy show, every one of the comedians we are presenting is hugely experienced and has sold out shows in their own right.

Mike Gunn: “One of the top ten stand-ups in the country" The Independent

Carey Marx: “A comic at his gleeful best” - Edinburgh Evening News ★★★★★

Ninia Benjamin
MC, Ninia Benjamin is a tour-de-force of comedy… she's outrageously rude but above all sidesplittingly funny. Ninia was catapulted to stardom as one third of BBC2′s 3 Non-Blondes and has appeared in various shows including Celebrity Master-chef (a terrible chef but very funny) but it's on the live stage where her comedy talents really shine. According to her, "if I think it's funny you'll find it funny".

Carey Marx
Writer and star of BBC Radio 4’s Intensive Carey, twice winner of Best International Show at the New Zealand Comedy Festival, and Leicester Comedy Festival Best Show nominee. Carey is currently working on his new show for Edinburgh 2017, The Afterwife. His marriage has just crumbled and he now finds himself single at the age of 50. In this savagely introspective show, he tries to come to terms with failure, disappointment, enthusiasm and freedom. Carey’s cynicism becomes inextricably married to dark cold reality. But don’t fear, nothing is too dark, cold or real for Carey.

His previous eleven solo shows have been described as, ‘Quite brutal, in a darkly comic Quentin Tarantino kind of way’ (Chortle), ‘Comedy of the most cerebral variety’ (Herald), ‘Essential Viewing’ (Fest), ‘Supremely-crafted comedy’ (List), ‘Awkward misfit Marx has a genius for the unexpected and hilarious left turns’ (Guardian), ‘Such a devilish grin, that you can only admire him for being such a magnificent bastard’ (The Scotsman).
A circuit veteran, Marx concocts his own blend of dark humour with mischief and glee. His wilful disregard for the controversial and taboo is tempered with his ability to find joy in the most unexpected places. An international multi-award winner, Carey is no stranger to screen or radio with credits ranging from Channel 4’s Gas to BBC One’s The Stand Up Show as well as his own radio show, Intensive Carey (BBC Radio 4) adapted from his wildly successful 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show of the same title in 2015. With such a unique voice it is no surprise that Marx has written for the likes of Newzoids (ITV), The Now Show, (Radio 4), and Nick Doody’s Bigipedia (BBC Radio 4). Join Carey this Fringe at his life-pondering, behaviour-dissecting, twisted, brutal and honest best.

Mike Gunn
Headliner, Mike Gunn’s history is as interesting and entertaining as his comedy. He’s been a successful stand-up comedian for over 15 years, but his road to success was a rocky one involving a misspent youth, a heroin addiction spanning 15 years and a stint in a psychiatric unit. Thankfully his sordid past is long behind him; but it cultivated a deeply cynical outlook and a perverse desire led him into the world of stand-up. A self-confessed pessimist, he describes himself as “not a natural choice for a career in laughter”. The evidence however, might suggest otherwise.
For well over a decade Mike has been firmly established as one of the most sought-after and accomplished comedians working on the UK and international circuit. An original talent, distinguished by his trademark laconic and lugubrious dark humour, killer punch lines and masterful delivery. Mike headlines at all the major clubs in the UK and has performed all across the globe, in the Middle and Far East, and as far afield as New Zealand and Australia; completing a five week sell out season at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He has also entertained the troops in the Falkland Islands.

“Piercingly funny…fiendishly funny as dry as a dead mans bones” The List

“Mike Gunn will make you die laughing” The Guardian

“The comedy circuit’s most vivid raconteur” The Stage

“Compelling…absorbing…darkly funny” The Scotsman

“Has the remarkable ability to straddle the light and dark, to combine dread and hilarity in a single observation” The List

“Naturally funny…engrossing” Chortle
