Last Show: Thursday 7 th October 2021

PizzaExpress Live (Holborn)

Those in the know have been listening, and waiting, but we're delighted to announce that East London's finest funk ensemble, Smith and The Honey Badgers are finally back! While they've been honing their live show at Lovebox and Boomtown Fair, as well as sharing a stage with George Clinton, and getting some airplay on Craig Charles' Funk and Soul show for BBC6 music, they've managed to put together some fresh fire in the studio.  With a new release on Detroit's mighty Funk Night Records Smith. Part Sharon Jones, part Irma Thomas, vocalist Marietta Smith has the pipes. She is backed by a 7 piece outfit, who spread their funk and sweet, sweet soul around like fresh jam. Expect classic deep-soul vocals, with a heavy-funk backing. If you like labels like Daptone, Motown, or Stax then you need to check them out!

“This roaring tune is pure fire for sure, we played it on repeat for months this year so no hesitation. So glad to see it released on a nice little 45 with a dope covert artwork… and the sweet soul ballad on the b-side ain't bad either! Coolness on vinyl.”

Funkalicious

“With a name and first single inspired by [the honey badger], London band Smith & The Honey Badgers are taking a no-mess approach to funk and soul too – lots of gusto and a great sound that’s really together. Grab a copy of the single before it inevitably sells out!”

Monkey Boxing

“The honey badger is the animal kingdom equivalent of a permanently angel-dusted Bruce Lee – it’s relatively small but you definitely wouldn’t mess with it. As it happens that’s not a bad description of Smith & The Honey Badgers and their new release either. Relative unknowns on the funk and soul scene, they’ve recently released an ass-kicking 45 featuring The Honey Badger Strut.”

“To make doubly sure you won’t forget about them, they’ve got the dopest logo of any funk band going…”
