The JMI Youth Big Band is rooted in contemporary Jewish music and big band jazz, assimilating myriad styles and influences from around the world through their unique musical lens. Bringing together young musicians from diverse and varied backgrounds and traditions, with an inclusive approach to creative music learning and improvisation. Breaking boundaries and bridging cross-cultural divides, this extraordinary ensemble focuses on the power and energy of community and creativity.

The JMI Youth Big Band was first formed as a direct result of a conversation in early 2017 between the Jewish Music Institute and Sam Eastmond (JMI YBB Musical Director) about the growing need for and provision of high quality youth music education centered around Jewish culture and identity. 

The ensemble is made up of talented young musicians aged 11-18 from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures who share a love of Jazz, funk, soul and music of Jewish origin.

In the 6 years they have been together the band have so far released 2 albums and 2 EPs, and performed in front of capacity crowds at venues and festivals all over London. The band regularly features a number of internationally renowned guest musicians both live and on recordings including; Jon Madof, Sam Day Harmet, Josephine Davies, Andy Watts, Mike Wilkins, Tom Briers and Moss Freed.
