“Steve has his own style. He plays from the bottom to the top of the horn whilst maintaining the integrity of the chords. I can't think of another trumpet player that can do what he does."

Wynton Marsalis

Steve is a Royal Academy alumni, making a big name for himself as a an inventive and always reliable session and big band innovative improvising soloist, including features with Gareth Lockrane and Geoff Gascoyne and as a featured soloist playing the solo role in Gil Evans arrangements of Porgy and Bess in the EFG London Jazz Festival.

This latest project, and tonight’s Dean Street concert is it’s London launch, explores nonet music from McCoy Tyner's seminal and underrated album “Tender Moments” as well as some more familiar favourites from Miles Davis' “Birth of the Cool”. Both albums feature the lush sonorities of tuba and french horn within the instrumentation (still unusual and rarely used within a jazz ensemble).

The programme will also feature original music by Steve, inspired by this rich tradition of the nonet in jazz music. Expect high energy swing, beautiful ballads, and exciting playing from nine of our very best jazz musicians in great transcriptions and arrangements by Steve Fishwick.
