Threebop Sings Ellington

The Pheasantry (Chelsea)

Duke Ellington was a revolutionary voice in jazz history. He was a composer, arranger, pianist and bandleader, with his compositions ranking as some of the most significant musical works of the 20th century. He has been a key influence on all members of Threebop; so much so that when we were discussing whose music we should feature in our third project, he was a natural first choice that excited us all equally. Ellington’s rich harmonic palette and soaring iconic melodies have stood the test of the time and we can’t wait to put our spin on them - from household classics to lesser-known gems. Although this may seem somewhat of a departure from the Threebop classic bop sound, these new arrangements strive to uncover a new take on vocal arranging, whilst still maintaining the group’s roots of the vocalese tradition.

Three of London's vibrant young jazz voices come together to create their own take on vocal jazz harmony singing. Inspired by the music of many jazz legends, Ella Hohnen-Ford, Rosina Bullen and Luca Manning perform their own arrangements with tight vocal harmonies and a focus on improvisation and vocalese.

Each of these vocalists bring their own personality and distinct sound to the music, culminating in a refreshing and engaging performance. Their resident rhythm section features some of the most in demand young players on the scene. David Swan, Will Sach and Boz Martin-Jones provide an interactive and spontaneous energy to the Threebop sound. Having finished touring and recording their recent Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley project this past year, the group have embarked on their new Duke Ellington venture. This performance will be your first opportunity to hear their new material, which we will present in the second set. The first set will consist of some enticing arrangements from other composers such as Count Basie, Frank Loesser and Billy Strayhorn.

This is one of the rare opportunities to see Threebop live in London, as having all met during their studies at both the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and The Royal Academy of Music a few years ago, they now continue to advance their musical careers touring and studying internationally. As a group, these performances continue to be a highlight both professionally and personally and we hope you will enjoy the evening as much as they will.
