One of Canada’s most recognizable voices in jazz, Tia Brazda’s jazz-pop gems and retro style have established her as a strong and unique presence on the jazz scene, both at home in Canada and abroad. Not only a singer, but a songwriter as well, Brazda has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, main stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, was rated as ‘Best of the Fest’ at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, and has toured numerous times across North America and Europe, from intimate supper clubs to large outdoor festivals. Her music has been described as a “hip pastiche” and a “walking catalogue of 20th century jazz styles”. Her first single “Cabin Fever” broke through in 2012 and she followed that up with the 2015 full-length Bandshell, named as one of the best of the decade in the Italian press and one of the best of the year by Jazz FM 91 in Toronto. Her 2018 release ‘Daydream’ saw her exploring new grooves such as bossa nova, soul and tango. Her new album WHEN I GET LOW, out this past spring on Flatcar Records, finds Brazda rediscovering songs from the Great American Songbook. These songs were chosen as Brazda connected organically with them throughout the pandemic. Mostly written in a time between the great depression and the second World War, they draw parallels to the world today and our present circumstances. The album has moments of melancholy, but is ultimately uplifting - dreamy and nostalgic with a dash of grit. Brazda makes these well-known classics stand on their own, combining a vintage sound with a modern touch, featuring her effortless vocals supported by a small cast of musicians from her live touring band that includes Grammy and JUNO Award winners. The new album was all recorded remotely, with all players tracking their parts in home studios due to the pandemic - a process born out of necessity, but one that provided hope and inspiration in a trying time. The track ‘When I Get Low, I Get High’ was featured on Radio France and reviewed favourably in Jazzwise Magazine (UK), with The Wholenote magazine saying: "You won’t find another singer who vocalizes music quite like Tia Brazda. She has a fully formed style that is wholly her own.” The track ‘Smile’ also has over 250,000 streams since its release.
