Event Has Passed

Last Show: Sunday 27 th September 2020

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Cooking up a hot gumbo of New Orleans R&B, Tim Penn brings the sounds of the American Deep South to PizzaExpress with his band The Second Line. The band draws on the music of Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Dr John, Allen Toussaint and then stirs it up with a pinch of Ray Charles, Tom Waits and Tim’s own original compositions, a recipe that has led to a string of sold out shows in London during 2019 & 2020. In Tim’s own words “This is the blues, but with a great big smile on its face”. Over the last few years, The Second Line has firmly established its reputation as one of the top New Orleans R&B bands in London. If you like the Crescent City’s rich heritage of Rhythm and Blues mixed in with a nod back to the Jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton then this is one band you won’t want to miss.

“Scintillating piano-based artistry”

Blues in The North West

Tim Penn has long been one of the most popular pianists on the blues and roots scene in London. Going back to the 1970s, Tim was a member of Dorris Henderson’s Eclection, and also the Kevin Coyne band alongside Andy Summers (The Police) and Gordon Smith, described by John Peel as "The foremost white Blues guitarist in the world ". For the last 6 years, he has played piano and accordion with The Cadillac Kings ("The UK's premier blues & roots act" John Clarke, The Times).

Tim put together The Second Line to play the music of the New Orleans’ pianists that he loved. The band members are long-time friend Nigel Appleton (Regenesis, G2, Metheny Big Band) drums/backing vocals, Francis Booth (Interiors, Mock Deer) bass, Chris Proctor (Matshidiso) guitar and bringing a little afro-beat to the mix, Ayo Odia (Osibisa, Fela Kuti, Yung Afrika Pioneers, Matshidiso) tenor sax/backing vocals.
