Trialogue was conceived in 2015, comprising three Cambridge scientists: neuroscientist and Dankworth Prize winner Chris McMurran (piano), physicist Arvin Vaghela (bass), and biologist Alexander Blackwell (drums). Their music stems from the jazz tradition and is set in the soundworld of the piano trio, but pushes forward and often straddles genres. Having performed widely, including at the London Jazz Festival (EKLEKTIC), Cambridge Jazz Festival, and the 606 Club, they will be performing original compositions from their 2018 album “First Flight” alongside reimagined standards and other melodies.

“A written and improvisatory intent to create differing threads of interest becomes more and more discernible."

London Jazz News

Trialogue was conceived in 2015, by three Cambridge scientists: neuroscientist and Dankworth Prize winner Chris McMurran (piano), physicist Arvin Vaghela (bass), and biologist Alexander Blackwell (drums). Central to our work is the musical world of the piano trio, a format with seemingly endless soundscapes. For us, this ensemble allows the greatest amount of musical conversation and discussion: a trialogue. We are conscious to pay tribute to the legacy of the piano trio, as well as to stretch its possibilities. Our music comprises both original compositions and the reimagining of standards and other melodies.

Trialogue has performed widely, including at the London Jazz Festival (EKLEKTIC), Cambridge Jazz Festival, 606 Club and Caius Jazz Concert Series (supporting Stan Sulzmann & Nikki Iles Duo and The Matt Ridley Quartet).

"The desire to delve deeply into the mechanics and mathematics of music is never far from the surface of the tunes” - Jazz Views

"The music is warm, sometimes abstract but always with an underlying pulse that fully embodies the feeling you get from music where the head doesn't overrule the heart - or vice versa.” - Bebop Spoken Here
