Last Show: Thursday 5 th May 2016

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

From the cream of the UK and European Jazz scenes comes one of the most exciting and creative bands around today. The group sounds new and fresh, and is packed with creative talent. Three very original horn players, UK's living legend Peter King, Osian Roberts and Steve Fishwick make up a dynamic front line, locked in by one of the strongest rhythm partnerships in the game, Stephen Keogh and Jeremy Brown. Five outstanding musicians. Diverse and interesting original material including groove based tunes, hard driving swing and free form, to rich soulfull ballads. The band plays with great spirit of freedom and has developed its own unique sound. Expect group interaction on the highest level with plenty of flashes of individual brilliance.

”A wonderful musician, Peter King, of course, is a master of his instrument. People are aware of that here in America as well as in England”

Elvin Jones

"This very fine quintet was founded by Irish drummer Stephen Keogh and bassist Jeremy Brown. The arrangements make the three-horn front-line sound bigger than it is, and Brown and Keogh are a springy and dynamic straightahead rhythm section. The solos, meanwhile, are superb, and fully exploit the players' contrasting styles." John Fordham The Guardian

JEREMY BROWN/STEPHEN KEOGH
Jeremy Brown and Stephen Keogh have been a sought after rhythm section for over 15 years and in that time have played with a veritable who's who of Jazz including Bill Charlap, Mark Turner, Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin and many more. Jeremy is first call the bass player with the John Wilson Orchestra, Stacy Kent and the BBC Big Band. Keogh is drummer with the Frank Harrison Trio, Charles McPherson, Jason Rebello Trio Jazz Rainbow Project and Tina May.

PETER KING, in the words of one critic, “is the finest alto saxophonist that Britain has ever produced, and one of the finest in the world today” (Dave Gelly, 'The Giants Of Jazz', Aurum Press, 1986). He has been a major influence on the British Jazz scene ever since he played (at the age of eighteen!) the opening of Ronnie Scott's Club, London’s internationally famous Jazz Mecca. “Had Scott's Club died overnight and been heard of no more, it could still have justified its existence by pointing to a discovery like Peter King.”(Benny Green, 'Jazz Decade, Ten Years At Ronnie Scott's', King's Road Publishing Ltd 1969) ” A wonderful musician, Peter King is a master of his instrument. People are aware of that here in America as well as in England” said Elvin Jones in Jazz U.K. magazine Sept 2001. "Peter King is one of the best musicians in the world." (Lalo Schifrin)

Although he now concentrates on his work as a solo artist and with his regular Quartet, Peter has worked with such legends as Bud Powell, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Milt Jackson, Lalo Schifrin, Frank Foster’s ‘new’ Count Basie Band and the Ray Charles Orchestra. He has also recorded with Hampton Hawes, Al Haig, Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and many others

"I hear both Trane and Bird in his playing, but he is better than either of them." Gene Lees

“World’s great Altoist ... My Man!” Nat Adderley

STEVE FISHWICK

Steve Fishwick is widely considered to be one of the best jazz trumpet players ever to come from the UK, and is rapidly gaining a global reputation thanks to his flawless technique, and his beautifully flowing, harmonically rich improvisations. Legendary Jazz critic Ira Gitler had this to say 'My question is where has Fishwick been hiding? Hip middle register melodious bebop, but when Steve lights his wick he becomes a flying fish, soaring above the waves, totally in control!'
