Vaudou Game

Last Show: Thursday 24 th August 2017

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

New music from Vaudou Game, a funk-n-soul band from Togo, now based in Lyon. A unique fusion of afrobeats and 70s funk, Vaudou Game’s newest single ‘Revolution’ is an unexpected, energetic groove that pushes well past genre boundaries. Named after and inspired by the West African voodoo (or vodun) culture he grew up in, frontman Peter Solo employs ritualistic themes, particularly as they pertain to the environment. “’Revolution’ is not about a human revolution but about the way Nature has reacted over the last years and will continue to react. We see an acceleration of climate disasters, earthquakes, tsunamis, tempests. Nature revolts because of the way She is mistreated by human societies. Exploitations of natural resources, pollutions...From a Vaudou perspective, Nature and its elements have eyes, ears, a soul and she/they express dissatisfaction by radical events when not taken care of and when advice is not listened to,“ .

"Hot on the shelves, afro-soul & tropical funk record label Hot Casa Records presents a blistering album of contemporary afro-funk, from the mind and soul of Peter Solo, singer and composer born in Aného-Glidji (Togo). This was the birthplace of the “Guin” tribe and place of the voodoo culture.”

The Attic

Singer and composer Peter Solo was born in Aného-Glidji, Togo and through his music he channels the ecstatic voodoo rituals, melodies and form of his upbringing with funky guitars, keyboards, bass, rhythms and counter rhythms, and a steaming pair of brass. Since the release of their debut album ‘Apiafo’ in 2014, Vaudou Game have never turned down the heat on over 130 stages across Europe, Africa, America and Asia and can count BBC Radio 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson as a fan.

Releasing their second album this autumn, ‘Kidayu’, the range of influences stretch across the big bands of Ethiopian dance music to the rumbling funk and soul of the Civil Rights era. In true afro-funk style, Vaudou Game are serving it live and raw, full of groove with Solo’s lyrics bouncing back and forth until the result is so pulsating and mesmeric you just have to move your feet.

Musicians around the world are inspired by the heavy sounds of ’60s and ’70s Afro-funk from West Africa, groups such as Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, and Roger Damawazun from Benin. But there are few, if any, groups who take inspiration from the music of that era with more fidelity, power and creativity than Vaudou Game

The “vaudou funk” group is based in Lyon, France, but this mighty sextet is led by Peter Solo, a guitarist, singer, songwriter and vaudou evangelist from Togo. They’re back with a new single,  “Chérie Nye.”

The album was included in SONGLINES magazine’s ‘Albums of the Year’ for 2016.
