London Jazz News November 2018

The quartet has been together for 12 years and consistently earns standing ovations. Their concerts always include Darius Brubeck compositions, standards, South African jazz and ever-popular Dave Brubeck hits. His famous “Time Out” was released in 1959 and the Darius Brubeck Quartet will mark this anniversary in their performances. Themed concerts have become something of a specialty and recently the DBQ participated in a Leonard Bernstein centennial tribute playing innovative arrangements of his music. Their mutual understanding and interaction is always a pleasure to see and hear and their acoustic sound is melodic, spontaneous, rhythmic and engaging.

Playing to sold-out houses at regional festivals and clubs, the quartet’s acoustic sound is melodic, spontaneous, rhythmic and engaging.  Darius, while known for representing his famous father’s musical legacy and for his work in South Africa, is an imaginative jazz composer and performing his compositions is an important reason for the group’s popularity.  Following the success of “Cathy’s Summer”, the Quartet released a second album   “Years Ago” at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in February, 2017 and toured Israel in June as well as concerts all around the UK.

The Darius Brubeck Quartet  have already toured Sicily  and Poland . Throughout the year, especially last summer, the Quartet played in many parts of the United Kingdom, including some important jazz festivals like Marlborough, Scarborough and Cork. Their appearance at the Edinburgh Festival was broadcast live on BBC 3 and they also headlined at the Saarbrucken Jazz Festival in Germany. The repertoire embraces South African jazz, jazz standards, Dave Brubeck hits and primarily Darius’ own compositions. The Darius Brubeck Quartet’s latest CD, recorded in 2016, is called “Years Ago”.

Darius and his wife/manger return to South Africa every year where he retains an honorary research professor status at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and they are writing a book about their jazz life in South Africa.
