Mackwood's musical uprbringing owes much to his grandmother, a South-African immigrant fleeing Apartheid who met his grandfather through Jazz legend Hugh Masekela in the 60's. Harry Ling was born in May 1998, with both parents avid members of London's nightlife staples including Boy's Own and Chris Sullivan's WAG nights in Soho, which introduced him to the sounds of Soul, Jazz and Dance music with which he would later reconnect.

While studying at the Tomorrow's Warriors and Guildhall Jazz programs, he formed his first bonds at NT's Loft, Steez in Lewisham and the associated Brainchild Festival. He later headlined the festival with Levitation Orchestra, and began collaborating with established names including Charlie Stacey and Kokoroko's Yohan Kebede, who features on his upcoming album.
