The Pheasantry (Chelsea)

Cooking up a hot gumbo of old school New Orleans R&B, Tim Penn brings the sounds of the American Deep South to PizzaExpress with his band, The Second Line. The band draws on the music of Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Dr John, Allen Toussaint and then stirs it up with a pinch of Ray Charles, Tom Waits and Tim’s own original compositions, a recipe that has led to a string of sold out shows in London over the last few years. In Tim’s own words “This is the blues, but with a great big smile on its face”.

Blues in The North West

With a string of sell out shows over the last few years at London venues like Upstairs at Ronnie’s, The Green Note and Pizza Express Soho, The Second Line has earned a reputation as one of the best New Orleans R&B bands in London. If you like the Crescent City’s rich heritage of Rhythm and Blues mixed in with a nod back to the Jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton then this is one band you won’t want to miss.

Tim Penn has long been one of the most popular pianists on the blues and roots scene in London. Going back to the 1970s, he was a member of Dorris Henderson’s Eclection, and also the Kevin Coyne band alongside Andy Summers (The Police) and Gordon Smith, described by John Peel as "The foremost white Blues guitarist in the world ". For the last 10 years, he has played piano and accordion with The Cadillac Kings ("The UK's premier blues & roots act" John Clarke, The Times).
