Last Show: Saturday 16 th December 2017

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Join Danish jazz star Mads Mathias and his quartet for a celebration of Christmas music from the Great American Songbook alongside Mads’ own swinging, seasonal originals. Expect to hear your favourite Christmas classics, such as 'Let It Snow', 'Baby Its' Cold Outside', 'Winter Wonderland', 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas', 'The Christmas Song', 'White Christmas', 'When You Wish Upon A Star', 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town'. Mads will be joined on stage by Alan Barnes, a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist. Alan is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers. His range and brilliance have made him a “first call” for studio and live work since his precocious arrival on the scene more than thirty years ago.

"Barnes’ melodic sense bypasses the usual scale-running clichés that pepper the playing of lesser bop disciples."

Peter Marsh, BBC Music Review

Mads Mathias

Described by Danish daily broadsheet Politiken as “Denmark’s leading male jazz vocalist” and by Gaffa as “an international star in the making”, Mads Mathias is an award-winning vocalist, songwriter and saxophonist, who has captured the hearts of music lovers with his charismatic performances, spirited personality and creative original songs.

Inspired and influenced by the great jazz vocalists of the past and present from Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr, and with a deep respect for the jazz tradition, Mathias is nevertheless an original talent with a unique and effortlessly charming vocal delivery and a skill for writing catchy and memorable, stylishly crafted tunes. Mathias returns to the UK after a sold-out tour last year including the London, Cheltenham and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals, and guest appearances at this year's 'Swing no End' BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and EFG London Jazz Festival's 'Jazz Voice' at the Royal Festival Hall.

Alan Barnes

His recorded catalogue is immense.  He has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone, and the list of his session and side-man work includes Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Michel LeGrande, Clare Teale, Westlife, Jools Holland and Jamie Cullum. He has toured and played residencies with such diverse and demanding figures as Ruby Braff, Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Ken Peplowski, Harry Allen and Conte Candoli.

In British jazz, the young Barnes was recognized – and hired – by the established greats of the time:  Stan Tracy, John Dankworth, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, and Humphrey Lyttelton.  But he is equally respected for his longstanding and fruitful collaborations with contemporaries such as David Newton, Bruce Adams, and Martin Taylor.

Alan Barnes’s unique musicianship, indefatigable touring, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz.  He has received over 25 British Jazz Awards, most recently in 2016 for clarinet, and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.
