Event Has Passed

Last Show: Monday 19 th June 2017

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

This is ARQ's first appearance at the club, following extensive touring and critical acclaim for their second album, ‘A Magic Life’. The band is led by bass player Alison Rayner and the all-star lineup includes pianist Steve Lodder and Deirdre Cartwright on guitar. The group’s profile has risen rapidly in the two years since their debut album ‘August’ with rave reviews for their recordings and live performances. Described by the Guardian as “spirited, eloquent and graceful” and “purposeful, full-toned and melodic, a beautifully integrated band” by the Observer, their music is awash with infectious grooves, lyrical melodies and a music founded in jazz but with folk, rock, classical and other world music influences.

‘Alison Rayner: ‘I was inspired to call the album A Magic Life because of two recent incidents. The loss of a friend last year, who wrote in her own epitaph about how magic her life had been; then a chance encounter with a young boy, who asked me "Is music stronger than magic?" I replied that to me, music is a merging of magic and logic. These events set me on a course of thinking about connections between memory, mortality, magic – and music.’

ARQ have built a substantial and wide ranging audience over the past three years of touring and their new album ‘A Magic Life’ has received extensive national and international radio play with four and five star reviews in jazz and national press.’
