A Chris Barber Special

Event Has Passed

Last Show: Monday 3 rd December 2018

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

A rare opportunity to see the renowned veteran bandleader, Chris Barber, in the setting for which he originally gained fame in the 1950s. This intimate show sees Barber joined by a selection of his favourite musicians, all of whom paid their dues in the top UK traditional jazz bands of Monty Sunshine, Ken Colyer, Kenny Ball and others. Chris Barber has now led a band for over 60 years, and still constantly tours with his Big Chris Barber Band playing concerts throughout Europe. His legendary groundwork, starting in the 50s, where he was the first to bring to the UK some of the great American blues artists such as Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Sonny Terry, Brownie Mc Ghee, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, had a vast influence on the music scene and inspired many now legendary British performers, including Eric Clapton, John Mayall and The Rolling Stones. He helped the careers of numerous musicians, including blues singer Ottilie Patterson, and his guitarist and singer Lonnie Donegan, with whom he began the skiffle movement.

A Chris Barber Special is an evening featuring some of Chris’ favourite traditional style musicians:

Alan Gresty, many years with Monty Sunshine's Band, trumpet

Ron Drake, played with many bands including Kenny Ball, clarinet
