The Dave Jones Quintet is an exciting band, playing new arrangements of compositions by the great ex-Miles Davis saxophonist/composer Kenny Garrett. It’s a new take on Garrett’s compositions (which were mostly for Quartet, originally), utilising the classic Jazz Quintet format, with that surprisingly big sound made possible by the harmonies of a front-line of trumpet and tenor sax. Pianist/composer Dave Jones brought his Quartet to a sizeable audience at Pizza Express (Soho) in Feb 2020, playing his own critically acclaimed compositions – this new Quintet features the same musicians but with the addition of young Ryan Thrupp on drums, and the versatile Andy Hague moving from drums to trumpet and flugelhorn (and arranger for this project). Ben Waghorn is on tenor sax, and Ashley John Long on bass, making this a gig that can’t be missed.

Ben Waghorn (saxes and flutes for NYJO, The Electric Lady Big Band, Tommy Chase, Slowly Rolling Camera, Keith Tippett, Goldfrapp, Kasabian and Portishead), Ashley John Long (bass for John Law, Brandon Allen, Geoff Eales, Alan Barnes, Scott Hamilton, Simon Spillett, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others, Andy Hague (trumpeter for Portishead, Mike Westbrook’s ‘Uncommon Orchestra’, his own bands amongst numerous others, and Be-Bop Club in Bristol regular), Ryan Thrupp (drums – one of Bristol’s emerging talents in jazz and other projects across various genres, including N’Famady Kouyate with whom he played at the Glastonbury Festival in 2023).
