Last Show: Thursday 26 th July 2018

PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)

Dave O'Brien has always had an itching desire to explore the unfamiliar and likes to invite audiences and band-mates to join the quest. In demand as a pianist, double bassist, bass guitarist, he has spent most of the last two decades working in a huge variety of settings - jazz (Alex Curtis Quartet) , classical (Aurora Orchestra), M-base (F-IRE collective), soul (Shadow Wiritng), swing (Man Overboard Quintet), rock (Thidius), Cuban, Brazilian and various fusions involving other influences such as south-Indian, Gambian, flamenco and cabaret).

Tonight however, he will, for the first time in a long time, be leading a brand-new band of his own, which includes the six-string bass phenomenon Kevin Glasgow (Asaf Sirkis, Joe Locke, Preston-Glasgow-Lowe) with the drum chair shared by Gapsar Sena (Maria Chiara) and Jamie Murray (Zhenya Strigalev).

The set will include some brand new music, as well as re-workings from his old Peter-Whittingham-Award-winning band Porpoise Corpus, but he will also be returning to possibly his greatest early influence, the distinctive and incomparable Chick Corea, reflecting on both his acoustic and electric periods.

"Beneath his overgrown Beatle haircut ticks a jazz brain of unusual vision and originality. British writing of such intelligence and whimsical, anything-is-possible spirit has not been heard since the young Django Bates was first unleashed. "
