A popular figure on the jazz scene for over 30 years and with 20 albums as leader, there could not be anyone better than Dave O’Higgins to pay respect to these titans of the tenor saxophone. Hank Mobley, once described as “the middle weight champion of the tenor saxophone” was supremely melodic, with a knack for defining the rhythmic and melodic jazz language of the 50s. Dexter Gordon had an enormous, imposing tone & frame, (he was over 6’6”) with a lazy swaggering swing and lush low register. He was a wonderful exponent of ballad playing. Stanley Turrentine was renowned for his distinctive, funky tone and groove, drenched in the blues.
