Phil Dawson is a top UK guitarist whose music is rooted in many different African, Latin and Brazilian music traditions, and who learned his trade playing with legends like South African jazz trumpet giant Hugh Masekela, Nigerian Afrobeat co-creator Tony Allen, Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, and London based Ghanaian afro-rock dons Osibisa. He’s also been a regular with Lokkhi Terra, Dele Sosimi and Soothsayers. Heavy company for sure.

“Freewheeling... dazzling... mind-expanding” -

JazzWise

Special guest for this show is spoken word artist, singer songwriter and percussionist Khadijatou Doyneh who featured on and wrote lyrics for the album. The stellar band also includes the superb flautist Rowland Sutherland (Airto Moreira, David Murray), the great Brazilian drummer Marius Rodrigues (Da Lata) drums; sonic experimenter Maurizio Ravalico (Jamiroquai, Collocutor, Dele Sosimi) on percussion and jazz fusion maestro Nim Sadot (Harvey Mason, Tony Lakatos) - bass.

Expect a rich evening of percussion-heavy, Afrocentric grooves, hints of Coltrane, Hermeto Pascoal, Tony Williams and the Afro-Brazilian tradition, all blended uniquely with grooving originals and spontaneous interludes, peppered with spoken word magic and boundless energy.

Phil’s album It’s Time, out on Funkiwala/Kudos, has featured on BBC6 Music, Jazz FM and a host of international stations.
